Collection Apart from exhibiting, some of the main tasks facing a museum are the collection, preservation and the archiving of the contemporary historical artefacts. Only a fraction of the items collected can be displayed in the permanent exhibition, the greater part of the inventory by far lies hidden in store. Some of these items, however, see daylight when out on loan or in special exhibitions when they can be viewed by the general public. Since collecting started in 1982, up to 100,000 objects have been assembled. The main thematic emphases of our collection are: The Olympic Games, German gymnastics, ancient athletics, sport in Cologne, sports combined with art and sporting developments of fundamental importance. The largest stored collections consist of posters, graphics, medals, documents, sporting footwear, sports clothes and memorabilia. The link to the archive gives an insight into the German Sports & Olympia Museum’s stored collection. A rich variety of examples representing the entire thematic range have been selected, thus giving some idea of the broad scope of the collection.
