Exhibition in the German Sport & Olympia Museum
from 26th April to 10th August 2008
Totally commercialised, questionable decisions, megalomania, political bias: Criticism of the Olympics is diverse, particularly before the Beijing Games. But is it justified? The Olympic Games were and still are an internationally moving event with a unique characteristic, i.e. the Olympic concept as a fundamental principle of the games. This concept aspires to connect sport with education and culture. It should also communicate “the joy of physical effort with the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles”. As is stated in the Olympic Charter!
In more than 1,000 m² of exhibition space, in rooms dedicated to specialised themes, you will discover interesting facts about the games, from the Olympic ceremonials through the political significance of the Olympic games to the extraordinary achievements and records; from aspects such as ecology and technical developments through changes in the image of a sportsman to the Paralympics. Here, you can also try your hand at the individual Olympic sport disciplines yourself.
Accompanied by extensive educational documentation for various age groups, the exhibition particularly addresses the needs of school classes, by demonstrating interactively that the Olympic Games are more than just a world championship in various sport disciplines.
Everything you have ever wanted to know about the Olympics, be it the values, competitions or world events, you will learn about it in the German Sport & Olympia Museum in Cologne from 26th April to the 10th August 2008.
